Poker Glossary for Beginners
Every game has its own rules and terminology and it is necessary to get understanding of these before actually playing the game. If you are a beginner to Poker then you might not understand different terms like ante, all-in and various others. Some of them are simple and are not that hard to understand but some are technical and you might not have heard them ever in your life. Video poker terms and glossary can help you remember some basic terms.
Here are some of the terms that are necessary for you to understand right from the start, you can learn the rest as you keep on playing and get some experience of the game.
Action
This term is used by the dealer if he sees that the player is too busy somewhere else and has forgotten that it is his turn. He will normally speak “Your action Sir” in normal circumstances.
All-in
It is probably the most widely used term in Poker. It means that all the chips you have got at the start are at stake and you have put in all of them. You can neither get them back nor can you buy new ones.
Ante
It is a small contribution collected from all the players at the start of game and is placed in a sort of pot. There is a slight difference between ante’s and blinds and later is preferred than the former.
Buy-in
This term refers to the fee that is applicable if you want to enter a poker tournament. Higher the entry fees, higher will be the prize money and it is one off fee. You can play the whole tournament with that fee.
Free roll
This is relatively a new term and relates to online tournaments where unlimited players can enroll. This does not involve any entry fees and prize monies are usually high. Winning chances are low compared to live tournaments and as players keep on joining, chances of winning keep getting low.
Fish
It is a term used for players that keep on losing poker games for long periods. If you are a beginner then you can be a victim of it for quite some time.
Dead Money
This is referred to money contributed as Ante or placed in the pot and it is no longer there. It can also refer to the contribution by the player who has no chance of winning the game or tournament and the money in the pot is Dead Money for him.
These are some of the terms you should know, though there are too many poker term and it is difficult to remember all of them.
